The crunch of gravel rang in the air as Jacob pulled up to the farm house. He climbed from his truck and made his way out and around to the passenger side. He held the door open for Raine and followed her to a round pen, where the beautiful Nakota was sheltered. Jacob slipped under one of the slats and made his way to middle of the pen. "Can you get her halter?" His voice was low, but he knew it had carried to Raine. Murmuring softly, he opened the packet of treats he had pulled out of his bag while in the truck. "Come on, pretty girl. Nothing's going to hurt you. You're such a lucky girl, huh? Yeah, you get all the loving and treats you would ever want. You're nice and safe, and you're mommy loves you very much." His hand extended, he watched the mare as she gently took the treat. He gently reached up to touch her cheek, and a smile spread on his lips. "You're not so tough, are you, beautiful? See, I'm not gonna hurt you. You're gonna be alright. You're such a good, sweet girl, aren't you, silly." [/blockquote]

The ride to the ranch was easy and when the familiar site of the ranch came into view Raine started looking at the paddocks. She studied the bodies of still horses against the backdrop of the barn, ranch house and the Rickshaw mountains covered with snow. Raine was eager to see her horse and to see if Jacob could work his magic on her horse. They pulled into the drive and Raine was surprised by Jacob's manner, again thanking him as she climbed out of the truck. Standing next to him she had to admit that she was smaller than him. He must have been, what, 6"3 or 6"3? She was 5"10 so she wasn't exactly tiny but next to him she was dwarfed quite a bit. Not to mention that he was larger with his muscles earned from working years on the ranch. She on the other hand had depended on a treadmill for her lean body.
There's my baby.
Raine left her handbag in his pick up and led the way to the second paddock where a herd of horses were standing. Cowboy stood near Desert Dancer and the rest of the horses clustered around each other. One of them was Wildcat with her near-yearling foal Dee Boy. Raine stood at the fence, looking out at the horses when Jacob went ahead of her and asked for Des' halter.
Alright.
She confirmed, leaving the fence and walking to the barn. She went down the corridor and entered the tack room, walking down the length of halters hooked up on the wall alongside all of the other tack. Finally she found Desert's maroon red halter and lead, taking it off the wall then jogging out of the barn. From there she walked the few yards back to the paddock. She climbed under the fence and Cowboy's ears perked forwards. He knew his owner and had served her well whilst she learned to ride. Cowboy approached her, walking arund the stranger handling Desert and shoved his nose into Raine's stomach.
Easy, easy.
She laughed, rubbing his cheek and stroking his neck. The American Mustang reflected his owner's personality and threw his head up. He whickered and eyed the newcomer suspiciously. Desert Dancer on the other hand seemed apprehensive of Jacob. She had been put with the other horses after being trained with the halter, having been uncomfortable and lonely in the wild horse pen. She was more sociable with the horses but humans she struggled with. She seemed to calm whilst Jacob talked to her. Raine walked cautiously alongside him, handing Jacob the halter.
She's good on the halter but she does tend to misbehave. I haven't gone near her with a bridle or saddle.
Raine spoke softly and Des looked in her direction, holding her head fairly high as her ears twitched, listening to the two.
Hey Des.
She cooed, holding out her hand and the Nokota ran her lips over Raine's hand, covering it with the leftovers from her breakfast.
I just knew this white wouldn't last.
Raine chuckled softly, rubbing her hand on her jeans.

Jake watched quizzically as the two interacted. He narrowed his eyes as the young mare flung her head up before reaching down to snuffle Raine's hand, only searching for snacks, seemingly. "No more treats," Jake murmured quietly. He carefully ran the halter over the mare's body until she gained the confidence in him to let him slip it on. "Take the halter on the cheek piece, raise her head up to your face, and blow your breath into her nose. She'll learn to recognize your scent better that way. I don't know how long you've had her, but she's still pretty sketchy about people." Jacob watched, and gauged the mare's reaction. "She wasn't spooked. That's good. Can we bring her out to the round pen?" After gaining approval, he clipped the lead on the mare's halter. He didn't lead her, but clucked, and as she moved, he followed in her shadow like a foal. Finally, they went to the gate and Jake layed his hand on her neck. "Good job, beautiful," he murmured, letting her squeeze through the gate. He kept her under steady hands as he got her into the round pen, and grinned. "Do you have a lounge line?" [/blockquote]

Jacob was the one with the most knowledge so Raine had nothing to do but follow in his lead. She had the heart, that she did, but she had only ever read up in books about what she was supposed to do. There were horse whisperers and other people who used cruel tactics to break in a horse. Raine had trusted Wyatt who knew very well what he was doing but the poor man's wife had cancer - he just barely had enough time to run the ranch let alone train all the horses that needed attention.
Raine listened to Jacob and she approached Desert, standing at her side and running her hand up her neck, then onto her cheek before taking a hold of her halter. She had introduced herself to Desert, allowing her the time to get used to Raine's touch before she did what Jacob had told her to do. She blew her breath softly into Desert's nostrils and the mare curled her neck around, sniffing curiously at Raine and then staying quiet for a moment or two. It was unusual for the mare to be quiet. She fussed quite a bit and that came through once she was being led. At times she would walk sideways, fussing with her head as she was led to the gate, especially with someone following her rather than leading. Dancer was confused by the change and watched Jacob with careful eyes. She calmed once through the gate and walked calmly to the round pen. She looked around her although it was obvious her attention was sworn on the young man. Another horse whickered to Dancer once they were in the round pen and when Raine looked back, she realised it was Cowboy.
Poor boy doesn't know why he doesn't get any attention.
Raine spoke quietly, her hand lingering on the fence then she turned back to Jacob.
Must be around here.
She said, looking around.
But she's never been lunged.
Raine admitted quietly, looking across at Jacob before walking to retrieve the lunging gear hanging over the fence and taking it back to him.
Good baby.
Raine spoke to Dancer, who flicked her ears back and forth.

"Her first time being lounged?" I tried not to show my surprise before breaking into a grin. "Then we make it a game." He clipped the line on the mares halter, and walked a few feet away. "'Cmon, pretty girl." He watched as the mare began to move toward the fence, but he held the rope so that she could get within but two yards of the fence. He felt the electricity of the mare run down the line as the mare began jogging around him. "Good girl!" He crooned, watching her every movement. "Trot," He repeated over and over again. When the mare decided to slow, he began calling out, "Walk." He turned to Raine. "You tell her what she's doing. When she learns that, she learns that she's doing what she wants to do- just when we want her to do it." The sparkle lit his eyes again as he watched the mare come to a standstill. "Woah. Good girl." A grin lit his face alive and he turned to Raine. "See?"

Raine had been watching Desert in the beginning to watch the mare's reaction to this new trainer and she was reacting well compared to when she had first arrived. Raine was glad of it and once she made sure her horse was okay she looked at Jacob out of the corner of her eye. He seemed to be enjoying what he was doing and anytime he made that little step towards progress his eyes sparkled. Raine kept her hands in her jeans pockets and let him do his thing. He was obviously happy and for that Raine smiled, her lips curling up at the corners in a pleasant smile.
Alright, I see.
She mused him, her smile broadening as she looked back at Dancer and listened to Jacob.
I love that she's getting somewhere. Des has so much potential.
Raine's voice was thoughtful and soft, almost gentled compared to the toothy smiles she had been giving earlier. The ranch was a quiet place at times and it was here that all the healing happened. Raine especially needed it after L.A.
Jacob you're doing great.
Raine praised, watching her horse watch them.

You wouldn't happen to have an old bedsheet, would you? One you wouldn't mind using for her training? If you tie it around her barrel, it'll get her used to having the saddle around her, and she can learn that she can still move as fast and free with something on it as if she didn't. Once she's used to that, slip a bag of sand on her back, so she'll get used to weight. Before long, you should be able to sit on her. Don't try and make her move right away, just get her used to the idea of her being on you. Jake cast her a glance. He usually didn't talk this much- even about horses. Blushing, he twirled the end of the lounge and clucked with his tongue to get the mare to start up again. Spinning in more, she broke into a canter, which he began saying softly. As she began slowing, he did as he'd done before, calling out what she'd done. After trying a few more times, he walked to the mare, who wasn't even showing the least bit of pressure from gliding around the ring. Good job, beautiful. He clipped the lead onto her halter, removing the lounge, and walked her to the gate, and grinned. [/blockquote]

Raine folded her arms around her as the cold bit through her jacket. The jacket had been meant for running around town with the shelter of the shops to protect her from the winter winds. Standing there exposed in the round pen left her near frozen. She held her arms a bit tighter to her body but that didn't help at all. She was distracted by the cold when Jacob spoke to her again. That was the most he had said to her in one go for the short time they had come to know each other. She certainly hoped that he was going to help her right through this becase Raine was hardly any good all by herself. She had just learnt to ride on Cowboy who took in his stride when she made mistakes and staying with her all the while she fumbled. She had finally found her seat in the saddle and was doing well, loving her time to go out on trail rides. Raine certainly had enough time to go around. She had a part-time job at the grocer to keep her out of mischief and otherwise Justin kept her busy. If anything Raine was a little bit lonely apart from the times when she went to the bar.
Raine followed en suite to the gate and opened it up for Jacob.
Want a treat for your good work?
Rai teased him, leaning on the gate as he led Desert through and then continued onwards towards the paddock.
You did good, Des.
Raine kissed the tips of her fingers then laid her hand on Dancer's neck, stroking her winter coat gently.
Do you have time tomorrow to help me out with that whole bed sheet thing?
She asked, cocking her head to one side and sitting up on top of the fence whilst he led Desert through. Rai was finally able to look down at Jacob, but don't get me wrong, he was still helluva tall. Her blonde hair cascaded over her shoulder and Rai played with the ends, twirling it around her finger then just fiddling. Cowboy came up behind her and pushed his head through the fence, nibbling at her jeans.
Cowboy!
Raine laughed, reaching for the dun's head and scratching his ears like she would a dog.
Such a nuisance.
She said fondly, running her hands through his mane which was already tangled after yesterdays grooming.

Jake let what Raine had said sink in before releasing the mare and allowing himself to walk back over to the young girl.
Of course I'll help you. I just thought I'd outline it for you.
His grin split his face and he let out a short laugh.
As for a reward? I'm hardly deserving. I didn't do much but have Des run circles around me.
He climbed up on the fence beside Raine and watched the horses grazing. His jaw was tight and his head was tilted so that his cheekbones were pronounced more than usual, and his gaze was hard as he watched each horse in turn. His jaw tightened even more as he dropped his gaze to the grass, then back to Raine.
I miss this. Alot.

I love Des but I couldn't handle her on my own right now.
Raine admitted, sitting up a little straighter at the mention that he would help her out. She almost let out a sigh of relief. At times Raine could be independent but at other times she could totally depend on someone else. She was depending on Jacob now just like she had held onto her brother back in L.A. Sitting in that empty house with nothing but echoes off the walls. Raine shivered involountarily and shook herself from that memory. That had been a dark day and she was remembering it when she had this warm man coming up to sit on the fence alongside her. Surely her thoughts should have been elsewhere.
Believe you me, it's more than what I could have done. As sad as that seems.
Raine shrugged her shoulders and watched him watch the horses. She stayed like that for a moment before her eyes returned out to the horses. Cowboy had drifted away and was approaching Desert Dancer who lifted her head to the gelding she had befriended. They touched noses then stood together, pawing at the ground to find the grass that lay beneath the snow. Jacob spoke and Raine turned her head. The look in his eyes tugged at Raine's heartstrings and she couldn't help but show her sympathy through her eyes.
You'll have all of this sooner or later. You're a millionaire after all.
Raine's voice was gentle with a touch of humour to bring out his smile again. She had laid her hand on his and squeezed it, then returning her hand to balance herself on the fence.
Maybe you can get Deheya back?
Raine mentioned cautiously, then biting her lower lip having feared that she crossed a boundary.
I'm sorry. Its just that when you talked about her, I could see you really cared for that horse. I didn't mean to...

Jake's gaze faltered as Raine mentioned gaining Deheya back. He shook his head. There was no way Mekana would get rid of her. Especially since they had planned on using her for their breeding program. He took his worn leather jacket off and handed it to Raine.
Put this on. We can work more and I don't want your jacket ruined.
He jumped down from the fence, making his way over to Des. Murmuring just a few words, he was able to run his hands over her. Making sure to spend extra attention where the saddle would lay, he got her used to the feeling of being touched in places that were scary for a wild horse.
I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut My weakness is that I care too much But my scars remind me That the past is real I tear my heart open, Just to feel. Her brain's still programmed to live on the range. Her belly's her most vulnerable place, so she dislikes being touched there. By rubbing your hands there, she learns that she has nothing to fear from you, or your hands.
He tensed his muscles as a cold gust of wind blew in, and blew his hair out of his eyes. He shifted his weight, not minding the cold as much as the wind. [/blockquote]

Raine had watched Jacob's reaction and felt nearly helpless when he left, returning to Des after leaving his jacket in her hands. Her lips were parted like she had something to say but there were no words falling from her tongue. With his back turned to her Raine was left with her guilt. She just couldn't believe how vulnerable she had been in saying that he could get his horse back. She picked up her hand and pulled her hair away from her face, her fingers curling into her tangle of blonde hair. Eventually she dropped her hand and her eyes fell on the jacket laying in her lap.
She had put the jacket on and rolled the sleeves up a bit, quite snug in the oversized leather jacket but feeling iciness at her center. Her apology before had been left in the air and this time she wanted it to be sincere. She crossed the distance from the fence to reach her horse. Dancer seemed comprehensive but accepting of Jacob's touch and she dipped her head in the direction of her owner as she approached. Rai touched her horse's neck, then her muzzle, moving around to her other side. She stood facing Jacob from the other side of the Nokota and it was obvious that she avoided eye contact at first. Her hand was tracing circles over the bay roan's coat. After a minute or so her eyes flicked up and looked across at Jacob.
I crossed the line. I'm sorry.
She exhaled and slumped a little in her posture.
I only just met you and I don't understand your situation because I hardly know anything about it. But I care all the same.
She never quite had a way with words so Rai wasn't sure if what she had said was the right thing or not. She had no clue whether her sympathy had any place in his life or whether she should have cared that much. Her heart went out to him for just that fraction of their time together and she just knew she was pulling out the dramatics. The situation has changed so quickly from their grins to the sudden hurt. Memories could be playful - dangerously so or wonderful. Raine had buried herself into this too quickly and she knew that very well, she just couldn't help her own hurt when it rose to the surface. She had to bring herself back down to earth and deal with the humiliation of having caused this unpleasant situation.

Jake stared at the girl for a moment before resuming rubbing the mare's stomach. He felt a tad bit queasy over the discussion, but the only thing he really wanted was to drop the subject. He had a job to do, and he aimed to get it finished. There was no time for his emotions to decide to flare up.
Don't worry about it.
He focused on the mare before him. She was smaller than Deheya by about an inch, but more thickly build. Her motions showed her wild ancestry, and Jake nodded to himself.
Will you think that you're all alone When no one's there to hold your hand? When all you know seems so far away And everything is temporary, rest your head I'm permanent
He shifted slightly, and yawned, before frowning.
Is my phone vibrating?
He knew it was- he could hear it vibrating in the leather jacket.
Do you mind checking that? Just tell whoever it is, that I'm busy, unless it's an emergency.

Raine quit her small T-circles and moved on to a more fluid movement over Desert Dancer's stomach. Raine was moving her hand over the roan coat a bit cautiously but at other times more firmly to let her horse get used to her most sensitive areas. Dancer's ears flicked back before Raine even felt something against her leg. The coat hung so low and spread out at the bottom that she hadn't felt his phone vibrating in the pocket.
Raine retrieved the phone from his pocket and answered it as he had instructed. Looking down as she listened to the other person on the line. She quickly held the phone in front of Jacob, holding it over Dancer's back.
Jacob, its about Deheya.
Her eyes pleaded with him to take the call.
Its important. You need to take it.
Alongside her Dancer seemed to become uneasy and Raine put her hand on her horse's shoulder. She had left the phone with Jacob whether or not he took the call. Tending to the mustang Raine crooned, eventually finding her way up to her neck. She had found that T-circles helped calm your horse and it worked just as well with Dancer as it did any other horse. Dancer brought her head around, lightly touching Raine's hip with her muzzle then swinging her head back around. Again her ears flickered, now towards Jacob.

Surprise lit up Jacob's eyes, and he gently took the phone. He walked off a few steps, phone pressed tight to his ear. His whole demeanor changed, and he was fighting hard to not scream. He rolled his shoulders, and spoke in a low tone.
Quinn. You have to get her. Right now. I'll give you the cash when I get there. She's not going to be dog- she's PREGNANT?!
His voice raised louder, but still low enough to not scare the horses. He pressed his fingers to the bridge of his nose and took a deep breath.
Get her. I'll be there by... He checked his watch. Nine o'clock. Yeah. I'll have to borrow your trailer. No, it's cool. I'll get it back. My farm? We'll have to work on that. Make it ten. Alright. Bye.
He was stiff as he walked back to Raine.
Where can I go to buy a ranch? I need it. Tonight.
Panic made his eyes dart around like those of a horse in fear, and he was shaking slightly.
She's pregnant, starved, and headed off to slaughter.
