Raine was the first to arrive at the two doors leading into the barn designated to the geldings and stallions. She had two large bags of feed in hand and was carrying them towards one of the rooms off the aisle.
You got it?
She asked, holding the door open for Jacob and once he came through she carried her own bags down the aisle and the three geldings were poking their heads out of their stalls, hanging over the half doors and watching her as she walked along. The bags were heavy but somehow Raine was managing.
How the hell did we wind up like this? Why weren't we able, to see the signs that we missed And try turn the tables
I wish you'd unclench your fists, and unpack your suitcase Lately there's been too much of this But don't think it's too late
Nothing's wrong, just as long as You know that someday I will
Someday, somehow I'm gonna make it all right but not right now I know you're wondering when (You're the only one who knows that) Someday, somehow I'm gonna make it all right but not right now I know you're wondering when
She dropped the bags off and headed back down. That was already the second lot of packages they had brought into the barn and it was also the last. Raine dusted off her hands on her jeans and pulled her hair away from her eyes. She had come to Roman's stall and the tobiano withdrew his head, standing further back in his stall and eyeballing Raine.
Oh, baby boy.
She crooned, leaning on the half door but not too invasively. She called to him, her voice soft and encouraging. The gelding didn't seem to budge. He stayed where he was. It took a little while longer for Raine to encourage the gelding. She had to open the stall door and take the risk of entering his space. The gelding seemed apprehensive but Raine held out her hand. He moved his head away but eventually turned back towards her. Sitting on her outstretched hand was a pair of sugar cubes. His nostrils flared and he reached across, taking a step towards her and taking the sugar cubes with his velvety lips.
Such a sweet thing. Aren't you? Why were you being so difficult?
She stroked Roman's neck and his shoulders, then moved along to his back. The grey horse turned his head towards her, nudging her hip and resting with his head hanging low. She continued to stroke his winter coat with her hands, soothing the tension away and allowing Roman that time to relax.
Relax. I'll be back in a little while.
She stroked the horse's muzzle and forelock, fondly giving him a pat before exiting the stall and finding Jacob.
Roman's alright. He's just adjusting. Shall we go check on Deheya and the foals?

Jake pulled off his over shirt and lifted up his wifebeater. He turned his back to Raine, showing her the multiple bruises formed from hooves and teeth.
Just don't go in her stall.
His eyes were dark, and he pulled his shirt down before walking out of the barn.
Sunny days seem to hurt the most. I wear the pain like a heavy coat. I feel you everywhere I go. I see your smile, I see your face, I hear you laughin' in the rain. I still can't believe you're gone.
It ain't fair: you died too young, Like the story that had just begun, But death tore the pages all away. God knows how I miss you, All the hell that I've been through, Just knowin' no-one could take your place. An' sometimes I wonder, Who'd you be today?
Jake kept his eyes on the ground as he shoved open the door to the barn. Deheya was munching on hay, content in her stall, but Daa'bu and Minni were calling out in agony from being alone. Jake had two bottles with him, each filled with foal formula, and he handed one to Raine before slipping into the stall. Daa'bu nearly barreled him over, latching onto the bottle and closing his eyes in contentment. [/blockquote]

Raine's face contorted as she cringed. Jacob had pulled up his shirt to reveal the various bruises and cuts he had received from trying to control Deheya the previous night.
Don't plan on it.
She confirmed, knowing that going into Deheya's stall meant trouble. Still, she had to wonder what would cause the mare to turn on them quite that quickly. Raine's heart went out to the mare just as much as it went out to Jacob. He had been so down not having his mare, then the excitement of having her back and now this. The past week had certainly been a rollercoaster and it wasn't showing any signs of letting up. Soon there would be two more horses who would need to adjust to their new quarters and who knows how they would react.
Raine followed Jacob to the mare's barn and gave Deheya's a wide berth. She took the bottle when Jake handed it to her and followed into the stall. The cries were heartwrenching and the colt had just about run Jake over. She smiled at his enthusiasm for his mother's owner and turned towards Minni. She was standing with her head held high and excitement twinkling in her eyes. She was facing Raine and approaching with her head snaking up and down.
Hey Minni.
Raine approached the filly and held the bottle for her to feed from. Minni sniffed it before taking a hold and beginning to drink. She was quite forceful on the bottle and took a few steps closer to Raine. She laughed, having to restrain the foal so that she would slow down.
Calm yourself.
She said to the foal, looking over to her twin. They were just so precious. Raine had only ever started having maternal instincts when she turned nineteen. She had taken to little children and when they stared at her from their carriers or prams she had beamed, and in return received a smile from the babies. She just loved them to bits and seeing these foals now gave her the very same feeling. A warmth swelling ih her chest and a smile on her lips.
She'll be fine.
Raine had switched her gaze to Jacob who she knew was worrying over Deheya.
Its a rough patch.
She tried to reassure him, her eyes returning to Minni as she was pushing the bottle back in her greed.
Hey, hey.
Raine laughed, readjusting the bottle and holding it a bit more firmly.

Jake's dark eyes watched as the colt took big gulps out of the bottle. He wasn't being nearly as forceful as his sister, content to just drink.
She's only been this touchy once before. That was when Aziza fell in a we- damn. Damn damn damn. I haven't seen Aziza since the foal's birth.
As soon as Daa'bu finished his bottle, Jake was out of the stall. Jake knew his puppy had a habit of crawling to the hay loft in the excitement, and with the excitement of yesterday, he wouldn't blame her. The small dog rushed to the edge of the hay loft, whining and scratching at the ladder. Sure, she knew how to get up, but the sleep slope facing down made her anxious.
Jake climbed up, and Aziza pushed herself to the ground, licking Jake's chin and rolling onto her belly, her tail wagging a mile a minute. He lifted her up, nearly falling backwards, and brought her to the ground level. She was shaking, and Deheya's head flew up. She blew through her lips, and Aziza trotted to her stall. The two nuzzled, reveling in their friendship, and Jake groaned.
Dammit. [/blockquote][/b]

Jake was speaking and next thing his sentence broke off and he was cursing, noting that he hadn't seen his dog since Deheya had given birth to the twins. Raine watched him go but was helpless, having no idea what he was going on about. She stayed with the foals and Daa'bu was shifting around in the stall, anxious as Jacob left but then nosing around by Raine's arm, then nudging his sister's neck. She complained, grunting but never letting go of the bottle. She might have been stall but she was quite intent as she fed. Eventually Minni let go of the bottle and licked it once or twice then dropping her head. With her ears perked forwards she looked towards the stall door. Daa'bu had approached and was nibbling at her neck again. She turned on him and nipped his shoulder and the two ensued on a little arguement but a playful one.
Daa'bu. Minni.
Raine scolded as she stood and peeked out of the stall door. She stayed with the foals whilst she waited for Jacob and it was a good few minutes before she saw him return. Aziza was with him and trotted ahead to reach Deheya's stall. Raine rested her chin on her palm and watched Jacob for a reaction. He swore again but Raine didn't shrink away. She stayed put and with the fuss outside, the foals eventually poked alongside her to stick their noses up, sniffing at the door and curious. They could hear their mother and they made a few noises, calling to her.

Jake let out a relieved sigh. Finally, everything was okay. The foals were fed and content. Deheya wasn't going mad. Aziza was fine. Two stalls were made up- one in the mare's barn, one in the stallion's, and the horses would be arriving within the hour. He wandered to the foal's stall and watched them for a moment.
I'm glad they're people friendly. Most foals I've worked with are skittish of people.
He wrapped his warm arms around Raine's waist, setting his chin on top of her head. He felt close to the girl, and he was happy that she'd decided to come back. He moved his head down to her shoulder, his eyes on the foals, and cast a glance out of the main doors. His brother would be here any minute. [/blockquote]

Raine had left the foals stall, just stepping out to stand alongside their stall. Jacob, admittedly, had intimidated her with his stormy expressions and she had no damn clue where his mood was going to go from one incident to the next. She allowed him his space to cool off but he seemed to show relief once Deheya proved that she was still clinically sane - just a little bit lonely was all.
Jacob walked towards her and wrapped his arms around her waist. She had to breath in, making sure that he didn't see when she closed her eyes and bit down on her lip. Jacob was absolutely gorgeous and standing behind her like that just made her go weak at the knees. Cowboys. Honestly.
Don't jinx it.
She teased him, putting her arm over his and absent-mindedly tracing light circles on his skin with her fingertips.
That means trouble.
She said, eyeing Jacob as he looked out towards the doors. She knew his brother was coming today and she was only joking with him. She reached up, laying her hand on his cheek whilst she gently kissed the other. She lingered for a moment but then she turned her head back towards the foals. Daa'bu seemed fixated on his dam whilst Minni was nervously flickering her ears between the humans and her dam as well.
Do you think we should give Deheya some more time alone or allow her to be with her foals again?

Jake's dark eyes flickered between the mare and the foals. Deheya was contentedly chewing on some hay, keeping her eye on Aziza. The young German Shorthaired Pointer had managed to wiggle up and over the stall door, and was asleep between Deheya's front hooves. A small smile curved up on Jake's face, and he let out a small sigh.
We're gonna have to see how Aziza gets on with the foals. I don't think Deheya's to happy to be allowing her from her sight.
Jake gently pulled away, walking to Deheya's stall, and pulled the door opened. The mare looked at him lazily, and he gently lifted Aziza. The big bay's ears went back, but he shut the door behind him. Deheya's head hung over the stall door, crying out in longing, as Jake placed the puppy in the foal's stall. Daa'bu skittered away, his eyes wide as he watched the strange creature, where as Minni trotted confidently up to the dog and began sniffing her. Aziza's short tail gave a half-hearted wag, and Jake grinned.
I think we'll be alright to bring Deheya in. [/blockquote][/b]

Raine stood back and watched as Jacob transferred Aziza from Deheya's stall to the foal's stall. Surprisingly Daa'bu was the one who didn't react well to the dog. Minni on the other hand was exploding with curiosity and was expecting the foreign creature quite closely. She got some loose fur stuck on her muzzle and she began rubbing her head furiously against her leg in an attempt to rid herself of the fur. Raine laughed aloud but as she did so her eyes wandered from the foals to the view just outside the double doors. A truck was just pulling up into the drive and behind it was a horse trailor. Raine kept her eyes on the truck then stepped towards Jacob who was otherwise occupied.
Jake?
She put her hand on his shoulder and then notioned with her head to the yard. The truck was pulling to a stop but Raine couldn't identify the driver.
Must be Quinn.
She said, actually having no idea when his brother was meant to arrive but who else would be showing up with a horse trailor? They weren't expecting anybody else. Raine's eyes flicked curiously over the truck and then she heard Minni's excited squeal.
Minni. Shhh.
She grinned, tilting her head in the direction of the filly who was attempting to play with Aziza.

Jake looked up as Quinn jumped from the truck. He was just as tall as Jake, but not as lean, and his dark hair was down past his shoulders. His old Stetson hung low over his eyes, and as he walked into the barn, he nodded to Jake.
"How's the mangy girl?"
Jake's eyes flashed, but Quinn laughed it off.
"You know I'm joking. But seriously, how's our "deer" girl?"
He began laughing again, and Jake cast Raine a pleading look.
Quinn, this is Raine. Raine, Quinn.
Quinn turned to face Raine, and smiled.
"Pleased to meet you, ma'am. Jake.. we gotta get the trailer unloaded. We have some "stuff" to get out of the truck."
He cast Jake a meaningful look, and Jake's face broke into a grin. He kissed Raine lightly, then sprinted to the trailer. Swinging the door back, Jake and Quinn both ducked to avoid a flying hoof. The chocolate brown mare was sweating, her eyes wide. Quinn slid in, pulling the quick release knot loose, and led the mare down. Jake motioned to where the stall was, before he entered the stallion's confines.
The stallion cast him a lazy glance, as if he couldn't understand the mare's uneasiness, and turned his head to make Jake getting his lead easier. Jake backed him down, and watched the stallion's nostrils flare, taking in the scent of foals. He led him to the stallion's barn, wincing at Rocko's cries of being ignored. Jake knew he needed to spoil his five horses, before taking on the new ones. Food and water was already in the stall, and Jake allowed him to have his space. He spent a few minutes with Rocko, Rome, and Bonfire, before making his way to Quinn's truck.
He reached in, removing the dog carrier, and peeked in to see two tiny puppies. They looked like mini-wolves, and they both made warbling sounds as he removed them from the confines. They buried into his shirt, and Jake smiled. He shut the door, walking back into the barn. Raine's back was to him, and Jake gently kissed her neck, before gently placing the copper and white puppy in her hands. [/blockquote]

Raine stood with her hands in her back pockets, standing quite as ease as Jacob's brother approached them. The two conversed but obviously Jake was bemused with Quinn and shot Rai a pleading look. She just had to smile because she could imagine what it was like with that many brothers. She was struggling with just one so she had to give Jacob some credit for still being sane.
Hey.
She gave Quinn a short and sweet greeting, becoming distracted as she felt a little touch on her hip. She turned her head and there was Minni, stretching to reach Raine. How she could even reach over the stall door was amazing. She really was a mini but her personality was amazing. So inquisitive and cute.
There's a song that's inside of my soul It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again I'm awake in the infinite cold But You sing to me over and over and over again
So I lay my head back down And I lift my hands and pray to be only Yours I pray to be only Yours I know now you're my only hope
Raine left the boys to go about their business, guessing that Quinn was also an experienced horseman. She would see the new horses later on but just then she was giving Minni some attention. The little filly had apparently abandoned Aziza and was nosing Rai's palms. Raine put both of her hands on Minni's cheeks, laughing as the filly lifted her top lip and attempted to lip at one of Raine's hand.
You beautiful girl.
Rai praised, running her hand over Minni's smooth baby fur. She would really be a beauty when she was full grown and Raine couldn't wait to be there. She had been so busy with teasing and playing with the little foal that she hardly noticed Jacob's footsteps up the aisle. But then there he was, his lips on her neck and his arms coming around her and laying something in her hands. It was hardly heavy and so fluffy...Raine looked down and her eyes widened.
Oh my god!
Her voice was a little high pitched as a little face leaned against her chest, whining in his throat and staring up at her with baby blue eyes. Rai stood still for a few moments but it was obvious by her expression that her excitement was bubbling up inside of her.
What's this?
She didn't think through what she had said and turned around to face Jacob. Her eyes were still wide and she was smiling. It was one of those smiles that sparkled - her winning smile. She held the little ball of fur a little closer. It was a husky pup with brown markings and piercing blue eyes that could become quite unnerving in certain light.
Is this your brother's? Oh my god. This is so adorable!
She looked down at the little pup again and he moaned, putting his little front paws on her chest and reaching up, sniffing at her curiously, leading to Raine laughing with amusement.

Jake's smile grinned as he watched Raine. At her question of if the puppy was Quinn's, a bright look filled his eyes.
No ma'am. He's not Quinn's. He's yours. And this little guy, is mine.
He motioned to the silver and black puppy that was curled up in the palm of one of Jake's large, callused hands. The little puppy looked up, his bright eyes focusing on Raine, and he let out a small wolf- howl. Aziza's ears pricked, and she jumped up on the stall door and whined.
Hey girl. Meet Diesel.
He allowed the German Shorthaired Pointer to sniff the new puppy, and her short tail wagged in delight. She loved every new thing that appeared, and had never shown a mean bone in her body. With a whine, she licked the puppy's head. He yawned, licking Aziza's nose, and falling asleep. [/blockquote]

Raine brought the little puppy up to her chest, holding it with both hands even though she could have held the tiny little animal with one hand. Even this puppy could fit in one of her small hands. Her smile showed how much she already adored the puppy and was turning her head to the side as the little husky gently licked her chin.
So adorable.
Raine spot, cuddling the puppy to her chest and looking at Jacob. He was speaking and she seemed disbelieving as he said that this was her puppy. Jacob was giving her so much and she had no idea how to repay him.
Really?
She looked a little critical but her eyes flicked back to the puppy then back up to Jacob.
I'll have to thank your brother.
Rai said, stepping closer to Jacob and put her hand on his thick neck. She leaned up and covered his lips with her own, laying a sweet kiss on his lips and then looking down as Diesel licked Aziza's nose.
I wonder how Scruffy will react. She's my kitten.
Rai seemed amused at that thought, imagining her little black and white cat swatting at this little puppy. She would have to make it up to her kitten or else she'd get the silent treatement. Now that would be beyond adorable. She just loved him to bits.

They have papers, too. Quinn breeds Huskies and Malamutes. All of the puppies are cat-socialized. They've been around birds, horses, and even cows. He doesn't like risking anything.
Jake grinned, and closed his eyes as Raine's lips covered his own. His dark eyes searched hers as she pulled back, and at the point of thanking Quinn, he shook his head.
Quinn just pulled out. He's not one for sticking around.
He shivered, his teeshirt not doing much to protect him from the cold, and hugged the puppy closer.
Quinn gives them all names when they're born, just to tell them apart. That little boy was Sky. Diesel was Shithead, because Quinn knew I wanted him.
Jake rolled his eyes at his brother's stupidity, and laughed as Daa'bu trotted up to investigate the new arrivals. [/blockquote]

That doesn't mean Scruffy will forgive him for ever being born.
Raine joked, laughing it off. Then she looked towards the barn doors, catching sight of the tail lights.
Okay, well...bye.
She shook her head but was still smiling as she looked back at Jacob. The puppy scrambled and whined, his little nose shoveling itself into her hair that was resting over her shoulder. With her sensitive neck Raine could hardly stand how ticklish it was. She squeaked and pulled the puppy from her neck.
Oh baby.
She crooned, gathering up the husky in her loose jersey, keeping the gentle puppy fairly warm. Her own blue eyes switched towards Daa'bu. He was reaching for the puppies to inspect them. Raine could see Minni was also quite curious and she walked a little closer to the stall door. She knelt down a little to allow Minni to inspect the puppy a little closer.
How lovely.
She said, casting Jacob a glance before looking back at Minni.
Gently.
She said, allowing the filly to bump her muzzle against the little puppy's back.
