Tap. Tap. Tap. Slam. Jacob tiptoed down the stairs and out the door, wearing his new blue jeans and a plaid button down shirt over a white wifebeater. It was chilly, but he greeted the chill with ease. Aziza trotted at his side. She pricked her ears, noticing the difference before he did.
Though it was his first full day here, he felt right at home. Pulling open the doors to the blue barn, he whistled softly. He heard a low grunting, and after checking that the heat in the barn was still on, he made his way to Deheya's stall. Her head was turned toward her stomach, and the was letting out low, grumbling noises as though talking to her unborn baby.
Watching, Jake narrowed his eyes. Deheya's hind leg came up, as if to kick her belly, and she staggered to her feet. The pleading look in her eyes nearly broke Jacob's heart, and he knew that the foal was coming. He ran into the lounge, placing bran in a bucket and filling another with water to pour over it. He'd have to heat it up first.
Running into the house, the water was in a pot and on the stove as he ran up the stairs. He grabbed four of his new, soft, baby blue towels, before jogging into his room. Raine was still asleep on his bed, but he knelt down beside her and kissed her lightly.
Wake up, sunshine. Deheya's foaling.
He didn't know if she was awake or not, but he didn't have time to spare. He grabbed the water off the stove, turning off the gas and burning his hands, but he was numb. He brought it outside, quickly pouring it over the bran, and adding a handful of salt. He covered the bucket with one of the towels, and allowed it to steam. He grabbed the birthing kit he'd put together when he'd gone to pick up Deheya, and jogged back to her stall.
Laying next to her was a perfectly formed, buckskin colt with a white appaloosa blanket. Jake crawled in, easily buffing the colt with one of the towels as he tried to keep his eyes on Deheya. Something wasn't right. She was still yearning towards her stomach, as if she hadn't given birth already. Fear raced through Jake's heart. He couldn't have just gotten Deheya back to lose her again this quickly.
He tried to keep his mind off of it as he gently breathed into the colt's nose. His first breath had been Jacob's breath, bonding them beyond spending time. The colt's inquisitive brown eyes watched as Jake worked around him, and he jumped as the human gasped. Jake pulled Deheya's tail out of the way just as a small, white socked hoof appeared. Twins.
Jake coated his hands with hand sanitizer before pulling on the birthing gloves. He could see Deheya's energy fading fast. He grabbed onto the tiny, perfectly formed hoof, and waited for Deheya's next contraction. With each one, he pulled the small foal further out, before she lay on the ground before him. He worked viciously to get her clean, and make sure she was breathing. He blew in her nose gently, and saw her tiny nostril's flare. The filly was alive, and just as perfectly formed as her brother. She was nearly all white, but with brown bloodmarks on her.
Jake sat in the corner of the stall, panting, as Deheya flung herself to her feet. He ran to the lounge, making sure the bran was cooled, and gently set it in Deheya's stall. He was estatic that he and Raine had decided to put her in the birthing stall last night, considering the extra size. She was the only horse in the barn, so why not spoil her a bit?
Jacob watched her, and noticed how her ribs still showed violently on her, but without the giant swelling of her babies, she looked better. She ate her bran, but when Jake approached the foals, she lifted her head and pinned her ears. He spoke softly, and after assuring herself that it was Jacob, allowed him to touch the foals. He pulled the colt to his feet first, seeing that the hunger that plagued Deheya hadn't missed her foals.
The colt took to his mother instantly, taking deep suckles of milk as he still watched Jacob. Jake was helping the filly to her delicate feet, and watched her make her way to her mother. She too began suckling, and he leaned against the wall, out of breath. He pulled off the gloves, throwing them in the trash, and grabbed the pitchfork from the wall. He quickly scraped the placenta and infected hay into a pile, shoveling it out into the wheel barrel waiting outside. He broke open another bale, laying down half of it so to allow the foals to rest.
You can go out to the pasture today, beautiful. Not for long, but you need to run a bit. And so do your babies.

Word Count: 847 Status: Complete Lyrics: Say My Name by Rihanna ft. Drake
Raine's face was peaceful as she slept, looking as comfortable as she could be. The past few months had been a struggle and Raine was confronted with the loss of two people she loved very much. She had come out to Westin as a temporary solution because she knew she would drown in the city, despite that it was all she had ever known. She remembered the holidays she'd spent here in Westin as a child and its peacefulness. Justin had been more stifled by the small town but Raine loved how quiet it could be. Her grandmother was her connection to this oasis in Arizona and although Raine missed some of the city bustle, she was finding that she could imagine living here. Yes, she missed her best friends but out of nowhere Jacob had shown up. It had been a whirlwind and she had seen him as a friend. Then he'd kissed her and sparks flew. She loved the touch of his lips, especially when he had pulled her under him on the bed last night. She just loved the feel of him leaning over her and his kisses were just what she needed. Raine was grateful for the attention he was giving her and despite herself, she was glad for the distraction from her brother. She loved Justin so much but she couldn't take him to the place he needed to be right now. He needed someone else to bring him up from the rolling tides.
Raine's thoughts taunted her sleep and she was only half awake when Jacob's lips touched hers. It took her a few moments but she opened her eyes, sleepily looking up just as Jacob walked away. She closed her eyes again and cuddled into the blankets but just moments later Raine's eyes shot open.
She's what?
Only thing we have on is the radio Oh, let it play, say you gotta leave But I know you wanna stay You're just waiting on the traffic jam to finish, girl The things we could do in twenty minutes girl Say my name, say my name Wear it out, it's getting hot, crack a window, air it out I can get you through a mighty long day Soon as I go the text you gonna right is gonna say...
Not everybody knows how to work my body Knows how to make me want it Boy, you stay up on it You got that something that keeps me so off balance Baby, you're a challenge, let's explore your talent
Hey boy, I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me Hey boy, I really wanna be with you 'cause you just my type
Panic rose up in Raine. Deheya was foaling?
Oh shit.
Raine stumbled out of the bed, taking the blanket with her accidentally then throwing it back on the bed. She stood in the middle of the room in the crinkled shirt and raised her hand up to her head. She had shot up too quickly but she gained her balance back and moved her hair away from her face.
Oh geez.
Raine grabbed her clothes off of the floor and headed into the bathroom. She jumped into the shower even though the water was cold, and was careful not to get her hair wet. She didn't have a hairdryer and within ten minutes of going outside with wet hair she would catch a cold. That was the last thing she wanted to have. Raine had to use the towel sitting on the rack and dried herself off, dressing in the jeans she had worn the night before but didn't dare wear her white shirt again. Her hoodie was still wearable so she threw that on. She just wouldn't be able to take it off or else she'd be the one milling around half naked, not Jake. The thought made her laugh despite how much of a rush she was in.
Raine hurried out of the bathroom and grabbing her brush, fixed herself up and tied her hair back in a ponytail. Her blonde hair was fluffier than it had been the day before but still looked alright, even with her darker hair showing underneath with heer hair tied up. That was the evidence of her failed attempt to become a brunette. Raine nearly fell over trying to get her shoes on whilst descending the stairs but she managed the feat and jumped the last few. She ran out to the barn and was panting from the sprint by the time she reached Deheya's stall. She nearly ran past the stall by accident but caught herself in time to skid to a halt. She brought her hands up to cover her mouth.
Twins!
She squeaked, her mouth hanging open as she dropped her hands and stared in wonderment at the pair of buckskin foals.
Jake! Oh my god they're stunning.
She had missed the birth but in all honesty, Raine was a bit squeamish anyhow. She had been in the delivery room once before with a friend and it was enough to make her think twice about children. Silently she jumped up and down, careful not to make too much of a fuss as she looked on at the peaceful sight. She came up behind Jacob and wrapped her arms around his waist, even if he was a bit bigger than her.
You're the proud father of two.
Raine joked, kissing his shoulder and then looking on at the trio. Deheya's portruding stomach had sunk down and finally they knew why she had looked so large. It was said that twins were a rare sight because a mare's uterus was not big enough to accomodate two horses. They were lucky that both of the foals had made it, especially with Deheya's condition. Raine was in wonder of the sight, her smile showing her obvious excitement at the birth of twins. Two beautiful little twins.

So much for her being lonely.
His tone was teasing as he watched the two perfect foals start to totter around the stall. He didn't understand why the people had lied about how far along Deheya was, but he didn't care. These foals were all his. He watched the little colt hop around, looking like an oversized rabbit, and grinned.
Daa'bu.
He turned to Raine, to explain what he'd said.
Daa'bu means rabbit in Shoshone. It fits him, don't you think?
He gently kissed Raine, then turned back to watch the little filly. She'd found her legs already, spinning in circles around her brother. He was getting annoyed, so he began hopping around to try to ruin her pace. Jake let out a quiet laugh, his eyes never leaving the pair.
You name the filly.
He turned again to meet Raine's eyes, smiling, before turning his gaze to Deheya. She was taking sips of water, but she felt his gaze on her. She lifted her head, splattering Jake with water, and flung her head up and down, as if laughing at him. A grin formed on Jake's lips and he couldn't help but laugh.
So you remember that game, do you? [/blockquote]

She's going to have her hands full, alright. Or...hooves, rather.
Raine corrected herself, leaning on his shoulder as the two foals played. She was still trying to wrap her head around this. First of all they hadn't even expected Deheya to foal this early and secondly they'd only had one foal in mind. Jacob was certainly going to be busy over the next few weeks getting his ranch up and running.
He hops like one.
Raine laughed and then returned her gaze to the twins. She met Jacob's eyes when he turned around after announcing that she should name the filly. She pouted her lips as she thought, her fingers tapping lightly on his shoulder as names spun around in her head.
Help me with my indian here. What would "whirlwind" translate into?
She asked, soon to be squeaking as she ducked behind Jacob. One thing that Raine was still struggling with was the mess around horses. It wasn't exactly like freshly scrubbed mall floors, or salon hair. Oh no. It was downright dirty. Even cleaning the litter box was pushing it but having found Jacob, a cowboy through and through, Raine was going to have to learn to deal with it. If that meant not styling her hair sometimes then she would just have to push through. Having said all of that, Raine was still avoiding the slobbery droplets of water that mostly hit Jake.
Apparently.
Raine finally peeped out from behind Jacob and then gained her composure, sheepishly looking at Jake then returning her eyes to Deheya.
I just had my shower. Thanks, Deheya.
She mused, grinning.

Minninnewah.
Jake watched the little filly, and smiled. It fit her, just as Daa'bu fit the colt. They both returned to Deheya, and began suckling. Jake grabbed a lead line, and clucked to Deheya. She came easily to him, allowing him to clip it to her halter, and he turned to Raine.
She needs to graze a bit. The grass will help with her milk.
He lead the mare, the two tiny foals staring in wonder as they followed her. He released them into a ten-acre pasture, knowing that even if some boards were missing-but there weren't- Deheya nor the foals would be keen on leaving.
Deheya's mouth met the grass with such exuberance that she almost lost her balance. She began snuffling up grass as the two foals began stretching their legs, their tiny tails flying out behind them. They both had their fair share of tumbles, but regained their footing easily.
Ready to go to the BLM? [/blockquote]

Raine considered the translation that he gave her and within a few moments she spoke up again.
Minni. She's smaller so that sounds perfect.
She confirmed and folded her arms over her chest, feeling the chill in the air reach her skin alot quicker with her only layer being her hoodie. However she was comfortable with the cold and although still adjusting, she loved wearing long sleeved jerseys. Raine fixed her hair so that it sat around her neck and covered up her neck. She stepped out of the stall and allowed Jake enough room to lead dam and foals through. She was smiling from ear to ear watching the newborns take in their surroundings.
Raine took to Minni immediately and watched her especially. She had a beautiful blanket of white powder over her bucksin body. It looked like she had already taken a spill in the snow and it was sitting over her back. Raine guided the foal back to her mother's side when the foal stumbled over her feet and fell a little behind. Eventually they were all in the pasture and Raine leaned on one of the lower bars to look into all ten acres. She shot her eyes up to Jacob when he spoke to her.
Jake.
She laughed, casting him a disbelieving look.
You just helped your horse birth two foals. Take a breather.
She finally stood up straight with one hand still on the bars, leaning against it and bending one knee.
Am I going to get out of it?
She cast him a charming little smile and tilted her head to one side, admiring the view. She could just see that wifebeater of his peaking out from beneath his checkered shirt. Good god he was making her weak at the knees.

A grin peaked the corners of Jake's face as he turned to face Raine.
I can't run a ranch with only three horses! And no, you're not going to get out of it.
A playful smirk broke his grin, and he picked Raine up easily, making his way out of the gate and locking it with one hand. He made his way to the truck and set her down lightly.
Come on. It'll be fun.
He pouted out his bottom lip, giving her the irresistible puppy dog eyes that seemed to work charms on her. It was true- a ranch couldn't run with only two three horses. One, hopefully two, more would help out amazingly. Jake knew that to get a ranch running, you had to get as much done as possible.
I kind of already put in an application...
He gave her a sheepish smile, motioning to the open livestock trailer behind his truck, which happened to have two halters with lead ropes attached hanging on a hook in it. He gave her a pleading look, his dark eyes searching her lighter ones. [/blockquote]

Jake!
She complained, putting her hands on his arms and wiggling her legs as she was literally picked up and out of the pasture. Once he set her down she pulled her hoodie down which had crept up her stomach but when she looked up her turqouise blue eyes softened.
Oh, you're kidding me.
The puppy eyes. The puppy eyes. She hadn't even been mad but if she had frowned, he would have turned it upside down. All Raine could do was agree with Jacob and just go with it. It was his ranch and she was really just tagging along for the ride. Raine followed him around to the trailor and hanging up on the hooks were a pair of halters.
My eyes are no good- blind without her, The way she moves, I never doubt her. When she talks, she somehow creeps into my dreams. She's a doll, a catch, a winner I'm in love and no beginner; Could ever grasp or understand just what she means.
Baby, baby blue eyes, Stay with me by my side; 'Til the mornin', through the night. Well baby, Stand here, holdin' my sides, Close your baby blue eyes; Every moment feels right. And I may feel like a fool, But I'm the only one, dancin' with you. Oh...
I drive her home when she can't stand, I like to think I'm a better man For not lettin' her do what she's been, known to do. She wears heels and she always falls, Don't let her think she's a know-it-all. But whatever she does wrong, it seems so right. My eyes don't believe her, But my heart, swears by her.
I should have known.
She reached up, her fingers running through his hair on the back of his head and fondly looking up at him.
I'll be right back. Just fetching my phone.
Raine trailed her fingers along his jaw then turned on her heel to jog back to the house. She climbed the stairs and just leaned into the doorway, snatching up her bag and shuffling through its contents. It really was true that a woman carries a pharmacy and her whole life in her handbag. Raine had plasters, allergy tablets, mascara, you name it. She found her cellphone and dumped her bag back on the floor. She left the room and as she went down the stairs she dialled her brother's number. It rang for a long time, so that by the time she was out of the house Justin finally answered.
"Don't be loud."
He obviously had a hangover.
JT, I'm not going to be home until later.
She reached Jacob but then rounded to the other side of the truck, turning away and leaning against the car door.
"What with jeans guy?"
She laughed aloud.
Yes, him.
"Rai, seriously? Ugh."
She could just imagine him sinking back into his pillows.
Tell gran, alright? I'll see you soon.
They exchanged a brief good bye and Raine flipped her phone shut. She turned around and put her hand on the handle of the car door.
Sorry. Just gotta tell them not to put me on the missing persons list.
Rai teased, flashing Jacob her pearly whites before hopping into the passenger seat.

Jacob grinned at Raine's comment. He knew all too well how siblings could be. Once, when he was fourteen, he'd ridden up into one of the canyons for the night, and the next morning all five of his brothers were there, with the police, looking for him.
I have another halter under my seat, too.
He cast a sheepish glance towards Raine. He knew that it would be hard for him to pick out a horse, but if he connected to two of them, he'd be set.
Oh.. and my brother's bringing me a mare.
He tried to smile, but the sides of his mouth pulled down, so it looked like a comical smile instead of a sincere one. He turned the heat up in the truck, trying to defrost the windshield, and pushed the gearshift into drive. [/blockquote]

Raine pulled her legs up against her chest and wrapped her arms around her shins. It wasn't the cold, it was just that she was more comfortable that way.
So tell me about your brother.
She turned her blue eyes on him, settling in for the long hour drive to the BLM. They had plenty of time and Raine was genuinly curious.
You've met mine.
Raine pulled down the visor and tilted her chin up to see her reflection more clearly in the small mirror. She played with her hair a bit then put the visor back up, setting her legs down and leaning her elbow on the car door with the window down. Her hair blew about her face gently and she leaned into her palm.

Which one? I have have five.
Jake let out a laugh before continuing.
Quinn's twenty. He's the second youngest, aside from myself. He's the only one of my brother's I've ever gotten along with. Then there's Cade, Zach, Matt, and Seth.
Jake shrugged, keeping his eyes on the road as the large trailer loomed behind him. It was difficult for him to see what was behind him, but he knew how to drive with a trailer from years of practice. He shifted, glancing up in the rearview mirror to check on the trailer.
What sort of horse do you want? Conformation wise? [/blockquote]

I've always liked the name Seth.
Raine said thoughtfully, tilting her head into her palm and covering up a yawn. She looked out at the Arizona scenery reaching out as far as the eye could see. There was snow everywhere and the typical little snow caps on the tops of the mountains. She absent-mindedly tapped the tips of her fingers on the dashboard as he asked her a question. Rai turned her head back to face him and considered him for a moment.
Well, with Cowboy he's like a downhill slide.
She smiled, chewing on her lip as she mused the thought then continued.
I guess a horse with a longer back, actually, leaner in general. But don't get me wrong, I love Cowboy to bits.
Raine wasn't sure how much she wanted another horse. She was just getting along with the horses she had now, who were taking her through the motions of looking after them. It was a whole new experience for her and she was taking it all in one step at a time. Then again she just had a feeling she would fall in love with one of the horses at the BLM. Being surrounded by horses just meant that Rai wouldn't be walking away without at least one.
I hardly know anything about it, though. I'd only ridden once or twice before I came to Westin. That was, what...four months ago? I still have a long way to go.
She admitted, looking across at Jake again.

So, Cowboy's more of a cowpony shape. You want one with more of an endurance horse build. Kind of similar to a Thoroughbred, yeah?
He grinned, keeping his eyes on the road. Jake's face momentarily contorted with pain, his back still stiff and sore from the night before, as well as the birth this morning. His eyes glanced up to the rearview mirror, watching the trailer for a moment.
I could help you with your riding, if you'd like. It's not a big thing.
His muscular shoulders rose and fell in a shrug as he cast a sideways glance Raine's way. He turned the heat up in the truck, noticing how his fingers were going numb, and glared daggers at the dashboard.
I need a new truck. This hunk of junk is a joke.
He gave an exasperated sigh, before reaching one arm back to massage his shoulder. [/blockquote]

Raine studied Jake, her own turquoise blue eyes were standing out against her blonde hair that had fallen across her face from the ponytail she had tied it up into earlier. She could see that he was in pain. The previous day she had only been able to carry so much and Jake hadn't accepted the store owner's offer to deliver all of the goods. Instead they had lugged what they could in Jake's truck bed and he had been forced to carry it all himself.
Looking at him right then she was reminded that she had to phone both of her best friends. There had been frequent calls between the trio ever since Raine's arrival and there had only ever been major news from their side. Just wait 'til they knew what Raine had been up to. And they said she wouldn't find any excitement in such a small town - well Raine was about to prove them wrong. She was uncertain about what exactly was going on between herself and Jake but whatever it was, she loved how relaxed it could be. She had just needed a change, without it Raine's moods would have gone haywire again, but with this playful, new thing she was headed to a better place. There was nothing particularly personal that she knew about Jake but asking the twenty questions was hardly on her mind. With a young man looking so good in a wifebeater and checkered shirt, and all the laughs they shared, she had being serious far from anything she wanted to do.
Little change of the heart Little light in the dark Little hope that you just might find Your way up out of here 'Cause you've been hiding for days Wasted and wasting away But I got a little hope today You'll face your fears
Yeah, I know it's not easy I know that it's hard Follow the lights to the city
Get up and go Take a chance and be strong Or you could spend your whole life holding on Don't look back; just go Take a breath, move on Or you could spend your whole life holding on You could spend your whole life holding on
Raine leaned forwards on her seat a little bit, moving away from the window and closer to Jake. When he had to change the gears she replaced her hand onto his shoulder, working her thumb into the muscle and massaging it just as he had been trying to do.
I'll repay you with another massage tonight.
She said, her smile gentle and charming as she replied to his offer of teaching her to ride. She would have to figure out a plan to move between Silver Stag and Second Chance, but she figured that it was something she could worry about later.
Car dealership it is, then.
Fondly she ran the tip of her finger along his jaw but nothing too distracting because he was the driver. She was just enjoying the touch of his skin, weathered by years on the back of a horse. There was just something so charming and so out-of-a-movie about sitting in a rusting old truck with a trailer lagging behind and a cowboy sitting alongside you. Raine had never thought her partying lifestyle would turn out to be this.
Once all this is done we can introduce you to Hillybilly bar. You haven't lived until you've lived it up with the locals.
Raine's smile broadened at the thought. She had built up a fan-base with the local cowboys for being her whimsical self. There were nights that she had even braved the small stage and sung for the crowd. Of course she had taken back a few drinks by then but hell, she had given a heck of a performance. What was also know were her outfits, some more dazzling than what was available in Westin's small-town stores. Then again that little black number had certainly been something.

Jake's eyes were on the road, but he rested his chin on the steering wheel as Raine massaged his sore muscles.
I could never part with this truck. As much as I hate it.
He laughed. His eyes flickered to catch hers, and he cast her a movie star smile. His eyes glanced back to the trailer, and sighed.
I'm glad that I'm going to have enough horses to be able to take a break. It's a good relaxation, just knowing that everything's going right.
He wrapped his arm around Raine, and kissed her hair gently. Taking a deep breath, he heard his phone vibrate, and checked the text. Rolling his eyes, he dropped the phone into the cup holder and shook his head, before turning his gaze back to the road. [/blockquote]
