Beer in his hand, Ashley Irving was the picture of predictableness. He would come in every evening when his shift was over at the hospital, he came here, had exactly four beers, and went home to raid the fridge before bed. Ashley was on his first beer, and would be here for another hour and a half. The bar tender didn't even look to see if he was done, she had him down to a science, just like everyone else who was a regular. The 26 year old wasn't hard to figure out, even though he mainly kept to himself. It was usually a shock to people when they found out that he and Kris were twins. She was so outgoing, and impossible to figure out, while he was quiet and predicatble. The bar tender came to give Ashley his second beer, and found that he wasn't done. Something was off, but she left beer anyway, giving him an odd look.

Word Count: 510 For: Ashley Irving Status: Complete Lyrics: How you remind me by Nickelback
Raine pulled her car up alongside the entrance to the bar, killing the engine and glanced at her appearance in the rearview mirror. With the window open, her hair had been blown around a bit but Raine couldn't be bothered to fix it - it wasn't too bad, after all. Then she hopped out of her seat, stepping out in heels, which weren't all that tall. Only a couple of centimeters off the ground. The top two buttons on her button-up shirt were undone, revealing the silverplated locket hanging from her neck. A couple of men were outside smoking but she walked right past. She didn't feel a craving for what people referred to as "cancer sticks". Too damn true.
It's not like you to say sorry I was waiting on a different story This time I'm mistaken for handing you a heart worth breaking and I've been wrong, i've been down, been to the bottom of every bottle these five words in my head scream "are we having fun yet?"
Raine walked into the lively atmosphere with wisps of smoke revealed in the lighting just above the crowds. Some were hanging around the tables whilst others were at the bar or on the make-shift dance floor. Raine had only been in the bar a few moments before someone grabbed her hand. She turned a little sharply but grinned when she saw who it was.
Old man McKenny!
"'ello darlin'. I'm still holdin' you to that promise of yours."
C'mon.
The last time she had seen him, she had been here in the afternoon, downing a beer feeling rather down. She had left work early, all because she couldn't stop the tears from welling up in her eyes. Raine was soft at heart and she missed her parents. She had come here to get away from it - to drown the sadness in her new surroundings but it wasn't working as well as planned. McKenny had helped Raine, taking her away from the beer and twirling her around on the dance floor. Now, still holding the old man's hand, she led him out into the heart of the crowd of dancing bodies. The atmosphere was more relaxed tonight. Raine was twirled to face him and she laughed, following the two-step with some difficulty but managing it with his guidance.
After plenty of laughing, smiles, twirls and dancing along to the music, old man McKenny mock-bowed and the song ended. With a little goodbye Raine was off to the bar, suddenly enveloped in her own silence, reminding her why she was even in Westin. Rubbing the back of her neck, she looked up at the bar. Once she reached the counter she leaned against it, offering a weak smile to Mandy who was the owner of Hillbilly Bar.
"What's your pleasure?"
Tequila, lemons and salt, she thought.
Cider, please.
Raine tilted her head, sighing as she waited for the cider. Her eyes fell on the half empty b bottle of beer and the face hovering over it. She eyed him for a moment then looked down.
Long day?
She asked, her eyes flicking back to him. Raine was usually a great socialite but her spirits were down a notch, so she attempted to make some kind of polite conversation. She got a negative vibe off of this guy, but she tried anyway.

Ashley heard someone talking, and passed it off as just someone else at the bar. Some other girl he'd grown up with and forgotten about. He ran into a lot of them, and they often got mad at him for forgetting them. So what if he slept with some girl in highschool? It was highschool. He found it was better to keep his head down in these situations, but curiousity got the better of him when he had no memory of the girls voice. He looked up at her, only to realize she had infact been talking to him. "Huh? Oh, yea." he said, downing the last of his beer, and taking the other one. His unfinished beer must have really thrown the bar tender off, she forgot to open the bottle. He did it himself, leaving the cap on the bar. "Having a lot of those lately." he said, glancing at the girl again. He didn't want to stare, she was pretty. Gorgeous even. But he kept his eyes aimed towards the bar, not wanting to seem like a creep. According to Kris, he was rather good at that. The twins had gotten into a fight that morning, as they usually did. Something about Kris being spoiled, and Ashley being an douche with a stick up his ass, he couldn't really remember, it had been so early. He was almost certain it was over the bathroom...

The guy didn't respond for a little while after Raine had spoken but after the lapse of silence, when she was about ready to leave it be, he responded. He took after another beer, removing the cap himself and beginning to drink that one too. Mandy handed Raine her cider.
Thank you.
The two woman both responded with a smile, Mandy's more of acknowledgement than Raine's vibrant, playful smile. Truth be told, Rai had been quite shocked to see the strangers face, sitting just one stool away from her. His eyes stood out to her, holding her attention until they were turned away. She did not bother to push her hair behind her ear as it fell forward, covering part of her face until she too looked up.
Is there a trace Inside her face Of a lonely miracle And so you wait And lie awake For a lonely miracle
You never really know What it is Not until it goes And if it comes again It's a miracle
Oh yeah.
She dragged out her words, agreeing with him with a slightly sarcastic tone in her voice. But then she smiled, as if swiping it aside. Rai downed a bit of her cider, feeling a bit more fresh with the drink cooling down her insides.
We have the bar at least. Drown our sorrows in beer. Then regret it the next morning.
She joked, spinning the bottle slowly between her hands. Then Raine turned around on the wood stool, hearing a few loud voices. Some of the guys were getting a bit rowdy but it was still early - this was mild.

"Oh yea, that's a great way to look at life." he said, a smirk playing on his lips as he drank more of his beer. His eyes flicked towards her as he thought what kind of problems she could possibly have. A pretty girl like her, she had to have guys tripping over themselves to show her what a southern gentlemen was like. There were very few actual 'gentlemen' in this town, and he was certain they weren't the ones holding doors open, pulling out her chair, or watching her butt as she walked away. He suddenly realized he had no idea who she was, or where she'd come from. He turned to her, offering his hand. "I'm Ashley." he said, politely. So, maybe he believed he was a gentlemen, and he was, but he wasn't going to brag about it. His eyes stayed on her, even as he heard other guys in the bar getting rowdy.

Rai nodded, tipping the bottle to her lips.
It pays off at the time.
She shrugged, laughing a bit. Raine's eyes flicked towards his hand then his eyes when he he held his hand out for her to shake. She turned to face him, her smile larger than life and bright - obviously a little bit perkier than before. She shook his hand with what people called her meek grip. When people said that a strong hand shake showed character, it often ended up with dents on your hand. Rai had learned that after meeting one of her mother's working partners. The man was like the incredible hulk without the green and let's say that after that she never shook his hand again.
Raine. Its a pleasure.
She shook his hand once then let go. She had never known a guy with the name Ashley directly. Christa did though. Ash, as she called him, was one of her best friends. They had known each other for aeons. Since they were three years old...I think, she thought. Raine realized that she had been looking at him, a short lapse in which she had paused. Biting her lip she played with the bottle between her hands again. Where had the socialite gone? Time to sparkle.
What do you do?
She asked, then added rather quickly:
Your profession, I mean.
Once again Rai bit her lip, trying to hold back a little bit of a giggle. Justin would have laughed at her for saying that. The joke between them had an embarrassing story behind it. Raine wasn't expecting Justin to pitch up at the bar tonight. He was back at Grandma's house, looking after her and watching her old programmes. Poor thing. But she had been doing it for the past few nights. Still, she felt bad for leaving him behind. She could stand it because she loved her Grandma and spending time with her was bliss. Raine could also give up clubs and wealth. Justin lived on all of that. He wanted to make it his profession, yet he was stuck in this town - exactly where he didn't want to be. His life was put on hold by some men holding a gun to their parents heads. It wasn't fair and whoever was behind it didn't favour the two siblings.
Raine could say that she found Ashley attractive. If she didn't then she might as well have been blind enough to not see that gorgeous face of his. Who could blame the girl for wanting to stay at the bar? She had been in a relationship prior to coming to Westin but that was pretty much over. Once again Raine was single. She had somehow fallen into all of these relationships that hurt her in the end, yet time and time again she kept falling into them. So she figured that it was time to have a little fun instead of putting these guys up on a pedestal. Raine wanted to flirt and not expect any ties attached by the end of the night - she wanted a little freedom by her own choice.

He watched her curiously, before smiling at her correction. He didn't really think of being an intern at the hospital as anything special. Nor that fact that he would be a doctor later in life. "I'm an intern, at the hospital." he said, pointing in the direction of the hospital that he spent most of his time at. Normally he would be wearing his scrubs, but he'd changed before he left this time. He smiled, taking another drink of his beer. "What do you do?" he asked, keeping the bottle in his hand. He was quite curious as to what brought this gorgeous girl to the simple, little town of Westin. Nothing happened here, why would she be here. Then again, people often wondered why he and Kris were here. The two never really fit in with the other kids.

Again Ashley smiled and Raine felt her smile brighten, as though it weren't considerably perky already. Raine felt happy again. She seemed to have forgotten about her worries and shielded herself in this conversation, taking her mind off of what she couldn't bear to think of. She was about to take another swig from her cider when she froze, her eyes widening.
An intern? Really?
She showed some obvious excitement, even when he went on to ask her what she did.
I work at the supermarket.
Raine struck a pose, as if it was something glamorous.
If I'd taken my life seriously after high school I might have been where you are. For now, I pack boxes. Its an exciting job, let me tell you.
Raine spoke with mock enthusiasm, although her laugh afterwards was real. It was bubbly and her eyes twinkled. She had turned around on her seat to face Ashley, speaking to him directly rather than facing her bottle. She felt so much more closed when she did. Music played in the background and eventually the song died down to the clapping of those on the floor and off of it. Men around the tables were headed to the bar and were ordering more drinks, laughing loudly and talking with booming voices.
This is almost as bad as the clubs in LA.
Raine looked over her shoulder at the men, then turned her twinkling eyes back on Ashley.
Ever been to Los Angeles?
She asked curiously, inclining her head curiously.

He laughed, turning towards her a bit. He decided he would go to the supermarket more often, Kris would get a kick out of that. He smirked, listening to her talk.
"L.A.? Nah, I grew up here, so...the city and I don't really get along." he said with a smile. He looked around at all of the other people around. He knew them all, but he didn't typically know they were all here. He never noticed who was in the bar, he only focused on his drink.

Word Count: 214 Status: Complete Lyrics: Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
Don't blame you. This town keeps you on your toes.
Raine joked, joining his gaze around over the crowds of people before looking down at her finished bottle of cider. Had she really drunk all that? Usually Raine didn't like ciders. Or beers for that fact. She liked martinis, cosmopolitans, you know, all the "las vegas" drinks that come in all sorts of different colours and flavours. But apparently in a town like this, beer was the equivalent to all that.
I guess home is where the heart is.
She finally said, standing up and smoothing down the front of her button-up shirt, looking down at Ashley with a mischievous smile.
Trying hard to reach out But when I tried to speak out Felt like no one could hear me Wanted to belong here But something felt so wrong here So I prayed I could break away
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky And I'll make a wish Take a chance Make a change And breakaway Out of the darkness and into the sun But I won't forget all the ones that I love I'll take a risk Take a chance Make a change And breakaway
Got your dancing boots on, cowboy?
She asked, holding her hand out to him. There was hardly a buzz in her head. The cider had no effect whatsoever on Raine's common sense, so she knew exactly what she was doing. She was a lively girl and when let loose, she really did let her hair down. And the band was getting ready to play another song. What kind of song, she didn't know, so long as she could get moving. If he said no, she'd be sure to find that Old Man McKenny and put on a show for the bar. Not like she hadn't done that before.

Ashley looked at her hand, and there was no way that he wasn't going to take it. He put his large hand around her slender one, and stood up, taking a final swig from his beer. Even here, there was no way he would come back to the bottle, you never know if there are some creepers around here. He looked at her, a bit nervous. He wasn't the biggest dancer, Kris had tried to teach him, and while he had rhythm, he was very nervous, and had convinced himself he had two left feet. He would be more than happy to let her lead him on the dancefloor, as long as she didn't make him a laughing stock infront of all of these people who knew him, saw him, and knew his grandparents... He didn't need his grandfather telling him about how in his day, when a lady asked you to dance, you swept her off her feet, and blahblahblah. And he definately didn't need Carla and Kris trying to teach him...again.

Raine couldn't hold back the thrill she felt when he took her hand. His larger hand wrapped around hers, which up until a few days ago had been manicured. Running around with boxes and spilt milk on aisle 3 had pretty much put that idea to pieces. Raine brushed her hair away from her face, combing it over her scalp and letting it fall where it would. She led the way onto the dance floor, tapping someone on the shoulder and saying hello before continuing into the heart of the crowd. Then she turned around to face Ashley, her blonde hair glowing under the lamp lights that were all around, creating just the right atmosphere for a bar at this time of night. And it wasn't even all that late.
Raine looked towards the band as they struck the first cord then began the introduction to the song. It started out a little slow, and Raine walked towards Ashley, coming closer with her free hand laid onto his shoulder. The singer, a middle aged woman with a real country singers voice, began to join in the song and people around them at the bar began to clap, howling and whistling. Raine laughed, her eyes shining, joining in with a little shout of her own. Then she caught on to Ashley's nervous vibe.
Why do you look so nervous?
She asked, feeling the crowd open up a bit as they all twirled their partners around.

He blushed, was it that obvious? "I don't dance." he admitted. Glancing around nervously. "But I really couldn't say no to you." he said, turning even redder. What a big mouth he had tonight. He shook his head a bit, his bright blue eyes begging her not to be offended. The song wasn't something he usually listened to, unless it was the background noise to his drinking. He watched people over Raine's shoulder, seeing them twirl, and spin. These people grew up dancing, and listening to this type of music, he had no idea what he had gotten himself into.
