Raine had only just begun to get comfortable on the hay bale when Jacob was already up and on his feet. Where he was restless, Raine was bubbly. She was noticing that difference and she could figure that keeping up with Jake was going to be a hell of a task. She stayed put, laziness settling in as did her eyelids drooping over her eyes. She was beginning to tire but she didn't let it on as she managed to cover up her yawn until Jacob turned around. She finally got up when he moved to go down the ladder and when she peeked over the edge she could see why.
And you didn't believe me when I said there were gaps in the fence.
She laughed, amusement showing in her cheeky little smile. She descended the ladder whilst Jacob held it for her and when she got to the bottom she stayed behind when he went ahead. He was leading Deheya back to her stall in the other barn. Rai lingered, crossing the aisle to reach Roman's stall. She brushed his muzzle gently then bent down a little to blow her breath into his nose. He snorted and tilted his head, lifting his upper lip and reaching for her. She laughed and leaned back again.
No, no Roman.
She smiled fondly with the gelding, stroking his cheek and placing a kiss on her two fingers, then pressing it to his forelock. He leaned into her touch but eventually he was distracted with the bolt on the door. Looks like they had an escape artist horse. However the bolt was firmly in place and there was no way he would unlock it.
Sun down, Friday night, Uptown city lights, Here I go start it out, I like, Dressed up out the door So damn ready for one night maybe more, I like, I like, With strobe light hot corse dirty minds When you cross my way, I like, I like, Just you and I touch at first sight, And the world around us wont stop turning to night, I like, I like, I'm losing control right now and I feel its right, I like, I like, Were caught in this moment I wont let you go, And the world around us wont stop turning to night, I like, I like, I like, I like, Hey there pure star lets go way to far come a little closer I like, Heart flips up and down, Dancing on sleezy ground, Betcha want to get it on, I like, I like,
When finally Raine exited the barn she was pulling her jersey closer around her body and cuddling into its warmth. She looked around the yard but there was no sight of Jacob. Her mouth pulled to one side, frowning somewhat as she looked around. Where on earth was he at now? And with a fever as well. She covered the yard with her eyes and she did a double take on the truck. Was that a pair of legs sticking out?
She pulled her hair back from her face and crossed the yard to get to him. She settled herself down on a box from their earlier unpacking. She leaned forwards, leaning her chin on her hands.
I'm thinking of meeting my brother for drinks.
She announced, watching his legs squirm as he moved around under the truck.
Gotta keep an eye on him, you know.
She fiddled with her hands, looking down at them and noticing that she didn't have any nailpolish on. She would have to fix that. Rai was fixated on her appearance. It started off as building up her confidence then it became a thing she did just for herself. She loved dressing up in fancy clothes and that was really what set her apart from these cowboys. She just didn't seem to suit the country girl type but there she was, strutting her stuff in her heels and managing to look damn comfortable doing it.
Why are you so restless?
She finally asked and her eyes stayed on him whilst he worked. It stayed like that for a few moments then she looked down at her hands again. She was just the kind of person who worried and he had become more antsy than usual after his nightmares. Raine had to admit that she had frequent nightmares. Her brother knew because she had sometimes crawled into his bed and curled up against his side. Justin was her best friend and as drunk as he had often been, somehow he had managed to be a comfort. She didn't know whether Jacob needed that comfort because guys being guys, he could already be over it.

Because I have to get a ranch up and running.
Jake reached up, pulling some debris from the under carriage of the truck, and slid out from under the truck. His eyes locked on Raine's, and he let out a loud yawn.
Why don't we take a nap before you go with your brother? You look exhausted.
The corners of his dark lips pulled up gently as he mentioned it, and he faced the sky as he frowned.
Snow's coming. Two feet, at least. I guarantee it.
He shivered lightly, pushing himself to his feet. His sinewy muscles moved under his tight skin as he crossed his arms over his chest, a dark look in his eyes.
Stupid snow.

Raine pierced her lips and folded her arms over her chest, leaning back a little but not too much. All she had supporting her was a cardboard box. She cast him a dirty look when he mentioned that she looked tired.
You weren't supposed to notice.
She crossed one leg over the other and stayed right where she was. Laziness had really settled in and she was realising just how much she was tiring. Now that was just her side of the story. She couldn't imagine how Jacob felt - he'd done four times the work she had and for that she felt a little guilty.
A summer drive away from dying: a broken heart nothing to lose. I know it hurts so bad just trying to please the ones you hate to love. And I wrote this note about someone I used to know so I'd remember how life can be so short when your left alone to wonder how it is someone opens and shuts the door.
I know your cold but come home. It's a shame how short we all have come.
You set your mind on cruise control; knuckles grip the wheel in fear to let it go. Love is empty, love is cruel, love it blindly breaks the rules. How could you have been a fool? It's something all of us go through. You choke back tears and swallow lies but those wiper blades won't fix you eyes, count on having clouded vision for at least a little while.
When Jacob stood up, crossed his arms and looked up at the sky, Raine cracked up. 'Stupid snow' had set her off and she had to cover her mouth at first but was unable to hold back her laughing. She doubled over and tried to quit it but was struggling to keep herself together. Eventually she looked up at him, wiping the corner of her eye with a grin on her face. At least it had broken her own dark expression.
Oh jesus, Jake. Stupid snow.
There were a few more giggles then she seemed to calm down.
Are you five?
She teased, standing up and keeping her arms crossed over her ribcage. When she walked past him she stroked his cheek with her hand. Her fingertips were warmer than what his skin was. It was chilled from the cold despite his fever.
C'mon, grease monkey.
She took his hand and led the way back to the house.

As Raine maie a comment about Jake saying "stupid snow", he cast her a dirty look, before breaking into a smile. His eyes softened as they met her, and he innocently switched to his puppy eyes.
I'm nawt a gwease monkey.
He pouted out his bottom lip, allowing Raine to pull him inside, and yawned violently. His body racked with the strength of it, and he allowed himself to be towed upstairs. He allowed his body to collapse across the bed sideways, his long limbs hanging off of the ends. He was asleep nearly immediately, his sore body giving in to the down mattress cover. [/blockquote]

Raine made her way towards the house, through the door and up the stairs. Once or twice she had to keep herself from walking into the walls and held onto the banister. Honestly, it felt like she was coming back from the bar already. She kept at it and eventually reached the top of the stairs and lazily walked into the bedroom. Jacob was on the bed before she could blink and as he laid there with his legs over the edges of the bed, she stretched her arms out behind her. Then she reached down to touch the tips of toes, stretching out her back. Once again she leaned up and stretched, smiling as the satisfaction of a good stretch settled in. She removed her cream jersey and set it over a chair near the bed. She climbed onto the bed and stayed sitting up for a moment.
Oh yes you are.
She laughed, wiping a bit of grease from Jacob's cheek. Her reply was certainly delayed but it made sense in her head anyhow. She eyed him and then looked out the window. It had been a long few days.
Night, afternoon...whatever.
She smiled at herself, finally settling her head down on the pillow with her arm across her stomach and the other above her head, her fingertips just touching the cold wall. She turned her head to look at Jacob. Fast asleep.
