Shane led Black out of the padock and turned him around so she could latch the fench closed. She then walked up to Raine as they walked up the path.
"We'll ride in the indoor arena. I don't feel like taking down the jumps in the outdoor." Shane looked ahead as they walked. All of a sudden black snapped at Firestarter because she was too close and lurched forward, knocking Raine to the ground, in the dirt.
"Oh my god, are you ok?" She said hurriedly as she tied Black to the closest fence post and pulling Firestarter away from Raine. She knew Firestarter wouldn't go anywhere, but she didn't want her to accidently stepping on Raine.

Word Count: 216 Status: Complete Lyrics: Flat On The Floor by Nickelback
Shane was talking to her about riding in the indoor arena and Raine looked out at the outdoor arena, with all the various types of jump set up all over the place. It was pretty intimidating to look at it, nevermind actually do it. Raine tucked her hair behind her ear and before she knew that anything was happening, she was flat on the floor. Derrière first, of course. Now that was going to hurt in the morning. That was something you could really look forward to, oh yes.
When Raine had drifted off, Firestarter had drifted closer towards Black. The horse grew aggravated, lashing out at Fire, snapping and lurching forward, pulling against the lead rope. It had knocked Rai right off of her feet and sent her into the dirt. Talk about eating his dust. Damn.
Not like I need to depend upon anyone Since I can see the lack of need for me to be here at all One more anthem for the know it all I won't be standing up for long I better learn how to crawl Learn how to crawl
In ten minutes I'll be laying out flat on the floor
Like I need to defend my own innocence So what, I did it, I admit it, and I'm pleading the 5th One more anthem for the know it all I won't be standing up for long I better learn how to crawl Learn how to crawl
Raine was startled but the shock came first, her giggle sounding a bit rattled.
Are you kidding me? I love getting Prada down and dirty.
She joked, covering her mouth as she spoke inbetween giggling. Geez, this is so embarrassing, was what she was really thinking. But it was just like Raine to not want to look like the total village idiot. Raine pushed herself up, dusting off her hand and looking down at herself.
Mmm. Mud pie.

Shane looked at Raine. Prada? Who was Prada? She thought to herself.
She gave Firestarter's lead back to Raine as she dusted herself off. You couldn't come to U Star Stables without getting dirty at least once. Shane herself wasn't at all clean. Her blue riding pants were dusty from the outdoor arena. The outdoor arena always got dusty when it was hot outside. The indoor never got dusty, so she was glad that they were going to be riding inside, and not outside. She made a mental note to hose down the outdoor arena before evening feed.
She made sure that she led Black far away from Firestarter as they made their way to the indoor arena. She opened the gate to the arena and led Black in first, and Raine followed with Firestarter.
"Clip her halter onto the tie right there." She pointed to the right side of the gate where on the wall was a a tie with a clip at both end was attached to a metal loop.
"Then we can get the tack from the tack room." She had never taught anyone to ride or tack up a horse before, so she hoped it wouldn't be too disastrous.

Shane didn't seem to take her joke too well, so Raine took it that she should just keep quiet. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she took the lead rope from Shane with a quiet thank you. She looked up at Firestarter, smiling and stroking her muzzle.
Sorry about that.
It was still funny, to her at least. Raine followed, this time also aware of the distance between Fire and Black. Landing in the dirt again wasn't flattering, despite her making fun of the situation. If you couldn't laugh at yourself, then who would?
Okay.
She led Fire into the clies, clipping on the necessary components with a little bit of hesitation. Shane was already heading out again and Raine jogged over to catch up.
Are we going to be using western or english saddles?
She asked. She wasn't sure what the difference was but she had known people who rode english and had tried western, saying "never again". Honestly, she was eager to find out. Riding was a big thing for Raine. She appreciated it.

"English. I don't ride western. We have Western tack, but I just never use it. Shane had been jumping her whole life. She had tried doing western after her accident, but her leg wasn't strong enough. It still wasn't, but she could still jump. She was glad her leg hadn't been bothering her that day. It would have been embarrassing if she had been limping around in front of Raine. And she was glad she had someone else helping her excersice the horses.
Shane waited until Raine tied Firestarter and led Raine into the tack room. It felt good in there. Nice and cool.
The tackroom was full of tack. On the left, was the western tack wall. Complete with ten western saddles, various color and materials. Next to each saddle was a hook with each matching headstall. Underneath was all the other tack that matched the saddle and headstall. The right wall consisted of 10 english saddles with each matching bridle next to it, and the matching tack, like the wall with the western tack. Right ahead of them, was the only wall with a window. The window overlooked the side padocks. On the wall, near the ceiling were ribbons from the shows she had won. Shane went towards the window. On the window sill were pictures of Firefly and Ferelli.
She didn't look at those pictures though. She picked up a news article that was sitting next to the picture frames, she must have left it there the last time she was getting tack. It was the article from her accident.

Phew. She couldn't help but think it. She'd seen western saddles before and they looked pretty damn big. Raine removed her hair from her face. A few strands had detached themselves from her pony tail and licked her face with the breeze from the air conditioning as she walked in.
Raine picked up on a little tension in the room when Shane moved towards what appeared to be the only window. Around it were ribbons, photos and a few old clippings too. Beginning to nibble on her nail, she watched. Should she say something?
Hey, um, did I ever tell you a few of the attorney and witness jokes?
She asked, reading the tags associated with the saddles. She was looking for Firestarter's bridle.

Shane was so engrossed in the article that she momentarily forgot that Raine was in the room with her. She shook her head and placed the article back on the windowsill and she put a picture frame on top so she wouldn't keep looking at it. She turned towards Raine.
"Um, no you didn't. What are they?" She said, walking over to the english tack. She knew exactly where black's tack was so she walked straight to it. Raine had to read each tag. She was almost to Firestarters tack, so she didn't say anything.
She was kind of dreading doing back in the heat. The indoor arena was still hot. There were two entrances to indoor arena. A gate in the middle of one wall of the stable, and one that leads to the outside of the barn, so it was open air. But if was, by far, much cooler than being in the outdoor arena.
She took the saddle off the rack and and folded the bridle across the saddle. She looked at the bridle and noticed that there wasn't a bit attached to it, and the stirrup leathers that were attached to the saddle had no irons. She sighed and flopped the saddle on a saddle rack that was in the middle of the tack room, along with four other saddle racks, that were used to clean tack. She went over to the window and opened a door that was under the window cill. At first look, no one could tell there was a door. She didn't mean for it to happen, but it was useful. She cabinet wasn't very deep, but it was enough to have a small plastic bin filled with bits. She took it out and balanced it on the saddle and went through, looking for one of Black's bits. She was usually really organized when it came to the horse's things, but she never bothered to organize the bits and stirrup irons. They were easy to find.

Yes, finally a chance for some good conversation.
Okay, these actually aren't jokes. They were actually recorded in a court of law. This attorney is questioning a witness and he says, "your youngest son, the twenty year old, how old is he?"
She had to pause to giggle, knowing what the punch line was.
So the witness says, 20, much like your IQ.
When she had told Justin the joke, he'd been lounging on the sofa with a toothpick in his mouth. Goodness knows why he did that. Anyway, he'd been looking pretty serious but after the joke he cracked a smile. It had been a genuine smile, but beforehand his mind had been somewhere else. Thinking about that now made Raine's smile fade and she looked down, fiddling with her hands then turning away. She pretended to be looking for Firestarter's saddle, but really, she was just trying not to cry. These mood swings were getting the best of her and Raine realized just how weak she felt. She would usually pull out her smokes, but since she was around animals, she thought better of it. That's when the craving hit her, but she had to swallow it down - painfully.
Oh, there it is.
Without realizing it, she had nearly passed Fire's saddle. She relieved it from the rail, hoisting it into her arms. Now for her bridle...there it is. Once she had the headset over her shoulder, without dragging the reins, she looked over at Shane who had a bit in her hand.
Ah. Not good.
She smiled weakly, trying to be pleasant. Once she was on a horse, maybe her nerves would bring out her inner comedian.

The joke wasn't really funny, but Shane laughed just to be nice. Usually Shane has a sense of humor, laughing at basically everything, but lately she's been so stressed. Mountain's eye has been bothering him lately. She hated when it was warm outside because the flies swarmed him. She had a fly mask on and sprayed fly spray on him a couple hours earlier, before she rode Torque. She was glad fall was almost here.
She loved going out late at night and riding Torque or one of the other horses around the outdoor ring. Put a couple spot lights out so they know where they are going. She loved riding in the cold. Watching her and the horses breath blend in the air.
Shane finally found Black's bit in the tub of bits and she put the bin back in the cabinet under the window. She put the saddle on her hip and walked toward the door, Raine following behind her. They were about to ride, after Shane taught Raine how to saddle up a horse. It was going to be interesting nonetheless.
